How to: Create a new template from an existing document.
Solution:
Open the document and save using a different name. Use AutoFormat and save as a template.
1) Open the document from which the template will be made.
NOTE: This document should already have many of the desired formatting features. Styles can be applied later using AutoFormat.
2) Make sure the text and formatting reflects the information desired in the template. Edit the text and formatting as desired.
3) Save the document under a different name.
4) Use AutoFormat to apply styles to the text:
a) Select the 'Format' menu and select 'AutoFormat...'. (The 'AutoFormat' dialog box appears.)
b) (Optional) Click 'Options...' to view and change various options before continuing with AutoFormat.
c) Click 'OK'. (Word reviews the document and applies appropriate paragraph formatting, paragraph styles, heading text styles, body text styles, etc.).
5) Select the 'AutoFormat' dialog box options as desired.
6) Save the document as a template:
a) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
b) Type the desired filename in the 'File Name' box.
c) Select 'Document Template' from the 'Save As Type' drop-down list box.
d) Type the drive and directory in which to save the file in the 'Save in' box.
e) Click 'Save' after all entries have been made.
7) Close the document. (The saved document is now a template.)
